SPECIAL EDITION: SPONSOR NEWS
BY ELAINE MOORE-JONES, Managing Funeral Director, Southlawn Chapel
The funeral business has certainly changed from the time my grandfather’s family opened ‘Moore’s Morticians’ in the late 1920’s at 1403 South Peoria in Tulsa. Then – as now – families count on Moore’s to be there for them during their greatest time of need. Yet, the funeral business - and Moore Funeral Homes - has certainly changed through the years.
During the depression, funerals were often paid for with chickens, eggs and other commodities. According to legend, Moore’s was the only funeral home willing to go out and pick up the dead during one of Tulsa’s darkest hours - the infamous Tulsa Race Riot.
In the early years, Moore’s offered a 50¢ a month Full Family Funeral Plan, yet there was really no such thing as pre-arrangement/pre-payment services, cremation, or online guest books. And there was little governmental regulation.
Today, Moore’s operates five facilities, including the original location on South Peoria. We proudly offer a full range of options, including cremation, pre-arrangement/pre-payment services, web site service postings, and online guests books that friends and family from all over the world can sign.
All funeral homes are required to follow Federal Trade Commission mandates that regulate pricing and require that families be provided with a funeral home’s General Price List, allowing comparison of prices and services. We also must follow guidelines set by other agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and OSHA.
While much has changed, the most important aspect of our business has not: Service to families. At Moore Funeral Homes, we believe it is a privilege to honor you or your loved one in a supremely dignified manner by providing the most thorough and professional service possible.
